Strengthening Human Capital to Support Local Pharmaceutical Manufacturing

RPWRP aims to be a structured program, rather than a single training course, aligning workforce development with broader goals of medicine availability, quality, and long-term sustainability.

Across Africa, the availability of safe and effective medicines is closely tied to the strength of local pharmaceutical manufacturing systems.

Workforce capacity remains a critical constraint. Gaps in skills and training limit production, weaken supply chains, and contribute to continued dependence on external sources for essential medicines.

The Regional Pharmaceutical Workforce Readiness Program, or RPWRP, is a Med Aditus Foundation program that will address these challenges by building skills, knowledge and preparedness.

Why We Do This Work

Africa continues to rely heavily on external sources for essential medicines. Limited workforce capacity constrains local manufacturing efforts and increases vulnerability during public health emergencies.

Regulatory and production systems across the continent also remain uneven. Only eight African countries (Egypt, Ghana, Nigeria, Rwanda, Senegal, South Africa, Tanzania, and Zimbabwe) have achieved the WHO Global Benchmarking Maturity Level 3 (ML3) for national regulatory authorities, reinforcing the need for coordinated system strengthening that includes workforce development.

RPWRP responds to these challenges by prioritizing people as a central component of pharmaceutical system resilience. A prepared workforce is essential to improving medicine availability, reducing exposure to poor-quality products, and strengthening long-term supply security.
